Write

Modern Amateur is a volunteer-contributor publication. We don't pay for content yet, though there are plans for paid content in the future. What we curently offer: a well-designed, genuinely read magazine with a real audience, a byline that means something to the people it reaches, and an editorial process that will treat your work with care.

If you are an adult amateur equestrian with something honest to say,
we want to hear from you.

Publish

what we

The Stable Life

Lifestyle content, gear, shopping, seasonal living. Service-oriented.

600-1000 words

in the barn

Practical horsemanship, equine health, barn life. Expert-adjacent or experience-based.

800-1000 words

features

Long-form personal essays, reported features, and community profiles.

1000-2000 words

the field

Short-form front matter: briefs, community callouts, industry data.

150-400 words

in the ring

Community and people coverage: rider profiles, trainer interviews, show culture, volunteer stories.

800-1000 words

We also publish several recurring columns and accept pitches for standalone columns with a clear, repeatable angle.

what we're not looking for

Junior rider content. Professional rider profiles with no amateur angle. Training articles written at a level that assumes professional expertise. Breed or discipline advocacy that ignores everyone outside that lane. Press releases formatted as articles. Anything that requires our reader to have an unlimited budget to find it useful.

what makes a good pitch

A specific angle, not a general topic. "The weird financial logic of leasing versus owning" beats "horse ownership costs." A clear sense of your voice in the pitch itself. A connection to the adult amateur experience, even if you're writing about something technical or discipline-specific.

We are cross-discipline. English, western, dressage, eventing, reining, trail, driving: all of it belongs here.

what contributors receive:

A byline in print and digital. A contributor bio and photo in the issue. Your article published as a standalone blog post on modernamateur.com. A social feature at issue launch.
